Fitness Confidential With Vinnie Tortorich

By July 3, 2013August 7th, 20236 Comments

My buddy Vinnie Tortorich — ultra-cyclist, celebrity trainer, fellow podcast host and now author — joins the show for a record 3rd appearance to talk about the release of his new book Fitness Confidential*.  Part memoir, part fitness primer and part comedy, this book is your beach read for July.  Vinnie and I don’t always see eye to eye on everything – particularly nutrition.  And he’s not everyone’s cup of tea.  But he’s still my man — we’ve gone through a lot together and he has always been there for me.

I love that Vinnie calls it like he sees it, doesn’t pull punches and isn’t afraid to call BS — particularly when it comes to the latest health and/or nutrition fad.  If that appeals to you, then you’ll love the book.  It’s pure Vinnie, through and through

Writing a book is damn hard.  But what’s even harder is getting people to read it after you spent years of blood, sweat, tears and toil to get it right.  I’ve been there.  So the least I can do for my good friend is give him my microphone, let him tell you about the process first hand, and help him spread the word.

I hope you enjoy the show!

SHOW NOTES

FINDING ULTRA NOW IN PAPERBACK

Finding Ultra* recently hit bookstores and online retailers in paperback.  And it’s cheap –  just $12.45 on Amazon* last time I checked.  What the heck, right?  That’s like a one cold pressed juice at Whole Foods; and will hopefully be even a bit more nourishing.  Check it out.  Already read it? Then tell a friend.

Love Vinnie! Can’t wait to listen. I’ve read the book and it’s highly enjoyable. Even though you guys don’t see eye to eye on nutrition, as you say, I’ve found excellent advice from both Vinnie and Rich, and I think the method of experimenting and seeing what works is really what’s best (within a vegan ethos, which is where I started, and where I still stand).

I love when Vinnie is on. Great interview I bought the book right after the podcast

Rich, as much as I love your podcast and really enjoyed the other two interviews with Vinnie, this one seems like it belongs more in the category of “How to self-publish and go on book tour”. The only story that Vinnie told from the book was one that he had already related in a prior interview with you. It’s fun to hear you guys going off on tangents, but I would have enjoyed hearing more about the actual content of the book, as opposed to the process of getting it published and marketed.

As between Rich Rolll’s diet and Vinnie T’s, Rich’s is closest to the only diet that is proven within a medical study groups to have arrested and reversed heart disease (Esselstyn/Ornish). Show me the study where a diet inclusive of Ruth’s Chris steaks and creamed spinach (one of V.T.’s preferred meals that is mentioned in his book) has arrested or reversed cardiac disease. Vinnie often defaults to a simple “no sugar/no grains” mantra which is a positive but sipping olive oil by the glass full is a matter of pouring a maximally caloric refined product down your gullet. I could go on, but, in my opinion, a lot of people are going to be hurt by seeing his book advice as license to load up on refined (oils) and animal sourced fats -Eskimos did suffer from atherosclerosis.

Loved this podcast Rich. You and Vinnie go perfectly together! I felt like you two forgot that you were recording 🙂 Thanks so much.

I love hearing you two ramble, which is funny because do not like Vinnie’s podcast at all. Funny how you two get along so well with such divergent dietary opinions. I’m sticking with McDougall/Esselstyn/Ornish until someone does better at reversing heart disease. I run scared from the high fat guys! Enjoyed the writing and publishing discussion since I want to the same thing. Keep up the great work!
