The PlantPower Hour :: Episode 1 :: Greg Smith

By May 19, 2012May 21st, 20127 Comments

[NOTE: Since posting this interview, Greg ran 90 MILES in his first ever ultra this past Saturday.  Quite amazing (and inspiring) given that the guy had never before run more than 20 consecutive miles in his life — if that — and trained only 8 weeks for the event.  He e-mailed me yesterday to say that he could have never accomplished this feat had he not switched up his diet as demonstrated in our interview.  Huge congrats, Greg!]

Proud to announce the launch of THE PLANTPOWER HOUR, our new YouTube webseries exploring the personalities and ideas behind the PlantPower movement.

In our premier episode, we meet my friend Greg Smith, an architect, designer, family man (our daughters are pals) and all around great guy who recently decided to take control of his health and fitness, throwing himself into his own self-styled PlantPower regimen.

Together we discuss his mid-life reboot — how and why he decided to go plant-based, grow his own organic garden and throw himself into running — and the impact it has had on his life, family and fitness.

Just 8 weeks into his personal re-invention, and boosted by his newfound vitality, today Greg is tackling his very first ultra-run.  We’re pulling for you!

I hope you enjoy the interview.

And if you have ideas for future episodes, I’d love to hear from you.

If you want to learn more about how and why I made the switch, check out our JAI SEED eCookbook and Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself  (Crown Archetype / Random House), available at bookstores and online everywhere.

Can we find out more regarding Greg’s 8 weeks of training that got him through 90miles?

Really inspiring. I’m reaching a similar point in my life to you. I was 214 pounds at 5’9″ and diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I’m now at 156 pounds after five months, almost vegan and much fitter. I’m really inspired to try some distance running. I’m interested to know if this is possible though, as diabetes does limit my ability to take on carbs like rice, pasta, bread and potatoes (they cause high blood glucose spikes for me). It would be great to see a video of someone who’s doing well with fitness and has type 2 DM.
